Spiders
What Spiders Are Common in Ontario Homes?
In Ontario, you can expect to see some of the following types of spiders:
- Common house spider
- Long-bodied cellar spider
- Sac spiders
- Jumping spiders
- Wolf spiders
- Barn funnel weaver
- Grass spider
They are usually found in corners of rooms, closets, boxes, dark crevices, basements, garages, and gardens. The spider has an unsegmented body with two main divisions and four pairs of walking legs.
How to Get Rid of Spiders
The simplest method of controlling spider infestation is to reduce the pest population (other insects) inside the home so they seek a more dependable food supply outside the home. Control of spiders is best achieved by following an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that involves multiple tactics, such as preventive measures, exclusion, sanitation, and approved products applied to targeted sites.
Exclusion
- Install tight-fitting screens on windows and doors; also install weather stripping and door sweeps.
- Seal or caulk cracks and crevices where spiders can enter the house.
- Equip vents in soffits, foundations, and roof gables with tight-fitting screens.
